The Song of the Summer
18 July, 2008 (14:30)
Every summer, one song seems to blast from every beach radio, car stereo, and block-party boombox around the city. This Friday, Blender editor at large Lizzy Goodman joins us to help crown this summer’s biggest jam.
But first — we need your help! Cast your vote for this year’s summer song. Tune in to Soundcheck this Friday for the results! (Need some help? Click here for clips of each song.)
Which song is “the song of the summer” for 2008?

I tried to vote for Little Jackie, “Liked You Better Before,” but the highlight box wouldn’t take the vote. So please record the vote through this email. Thanks. (Brian and Leonard Rock!)

None of the above… My best song of the summer is “The Next Best Western” by Lucy Wainwright Roche! Yes, I know it’s a cover, but I like her version better (although the original ain’t bad, either!).

Viva la Vida. Coldplay is in great form with this song. They owe a bit to Apple though for using it in their iPod commercial.

The songs of the summer 2008 should be Killer Creature Double Feature and The Fashion of Fear by Nim Vind.

Camilla/Todo Cambio is all I know about an absolutely transporting piece of music, that seemed to be about unrequited love, that I happened upon surfing TV one Saturday. Ironically, my vote seems to be suffering the same fate. Like anon4utu, I have to request the vote to be recorded thru this email.
PEACE

A copy of Girl Talk’s Feed the Animals has been glued into all of my CD players this summer. What are all these other songs, now…?

any song off stay positive. it embodies the summer– it’s sexy and honest and raw. if you don’t believe me– see the hold steady live, tell me you don’t leave sweating.

I tried to vote for Natasha Beddingfield’s Pocketful of Sunshine (no luck) - both for it’s catchy “Take Me Away” anthem, and the clever music/folder marketing in EW.

C’mon!
It’s obviously “So Hot” by Korean girl group Wondergirls! Funny, fun, cute, and NOT so earnest! Enjoy the video on Youtube.

Wow these new songs are terrible. I’d rather listen to some old Red Hot Chili Peppers.

It’s 2008!! You have to do categories! Call this “Pop Rock” summer song or something.
Taste is too diverse!!
That lollipop one is total crap on toast.
My category would be “anything I DON’T hear booming from cars in my neighborhood”
That’s my summer music.

Doesn’t anyone else think Craig Finn of the Hold Steady sounds like RANDY NEWMAN? Bruce Springsteen??? Please! Bruce should be offended. RANDY NEWMAN! THE HOLD STEADY!! Come on!

always loved “Spill The Wine” Eric Burdon and War. All tracks on War’s Greatest Hits still
hold up great as Summer Songs, which is somewhat odd being that they are LA and I am NYC

That “I kissed a girl” song is boring, repetitive, and the lyrics are inane if not insidious. As a lesbian I sincerely hate that song, but I can’t deny its ubiquitous and everyone else seems to love it.

This year’s perfect summer song was Panic at the Disco’s “When the Day Met the Night” but was sadly overlooked by almost everyone and seemed to get lost among the other filigree on their album. Too bad.
