Your radio promo for the “Choice” episode intones “bi, gay, straight” as one of the many possible choices people can make. Sexual orientation is a biological fact of life, not a matter of choice or style. It’s the belief that it is a choice that obscures the real issue behind such struggles as gay marriage: CIVIL RIGHTS under the law. Please correct yourselves and stop contributing to the ignorance that holds us back.

Okay, so I got up early this morning to make sure my iPod had the first of season 5 on it and guess what it was not there!

Argh.

I have to wait even longer.

So happy you guys are back!

Yeah!!! New season - I’ve been listening to the old podcasts so often I know them by heart. I am really looking forward to the show on “race.” But all the other choices for topics are great, too. Gotta make choices …

Comment from Fuva
Date: November 14, 2008, 4:02 pm

Haven’t heard the show yet, here in Harlem, NY. I’m sure it’s good. But I did hear the trailer for it in which you list “gay” and “straight” as a couple of the many “choices” we have today. Except that it isn’t, and I speak from personal experience. You probably didn’t mean to, but you run the risk of perpetuating a falsity that has had very many negative consequences for gay folk (who didn’t choose to be). YOU SHOULD MAKE AN ON-AIR CORRECTION OR CLARIFICATION.

The topic of how we make choices based on the emotional part of our brain and the rational part can be applied to Karl rove and the Republican party. George Lakoff at the Rockridge Institute discusses the reason why the Republicans have been so much more successful winning people over to their ideology. I believe he uses this research to prove his point.

Jad! You picked a Korean Pear as an apple… FAIL! You probably also ate it like an apple meaning you ate the rough gritty skin. Keep in mind that Korean Pears, which aren’t apples, are not even much like pears (they dont have the same smooth almost buttery texture of most pears). Try it by peeling and cutting it first. Theyre actually quite refreshing! Expectation can mean everything.

Being a conceptual artist forces one to adopt a broad spectra of mediums. Early on, when working with computer based video samplers, and the limitless world of virtual creativity, I realized YOU must set limit’s. select a small number of hearty moves, and master them. YOU will be tempted by the newest toys, leave those for your friends. This is what is meant by learning a discipline. This is what I remember.

Love the new show! I have been really looking forward to this new season! Definitely the best thing on the radio today.

Though, I think people might be misunderstanding the whole choice of gay and straight that was brought up during the “choice” episode. From what I understand they were simply underscoring that there are more paths to take today than there were in the past. Not too long ago at all a person couldn’t “be” gay, they had to fake being straight and not accept who they are. Now there is the option for people who are gay to live as being gay, there is a choice for them to come out.

I don’t think they meant it as a choice of being gay, but rather the choice to come out and live freely with your sexuality .

Great show, bitches.

Comment from Dave Kliman

When I listened to today’s episode, I was fascinated about these ways that people could be manipulated so simply. I thought I’d try out the “warm cup” concept when i found out i would be meeting somebody for the first time this afternoon. I made sure to hand her my cup of hot water, using the excuse that i was hoping for tee. she really appreciated me just giving her that cup and was warming her hands with it for at least a minute before I asked for it back. That’s when i realized how cold her hands were, and so I offered to warm her hands with my hands… that all worked out very nicely. I got her phone number. so good for radio lab!

I was also thinking how it would be interesting to look at the various phenomena that were explored in today’s episode and if I were a teacher, which I’m not, I would have asked students to devise ways they could either a) use one or more of the techniques to increase their chances of getting a desired result or b) become alert to when one or more of these techniques are being utilized whether it be for advertising, public relations, or political discourse.

It has always seemed to me that the Republicans are especially good at taking advantage of flaws in the human mind to further their ways. But I digress…

is there a transcript of the Choice show? I want to send parts of it to a survey I’ve been asked to complete on the work a facilitator of “vendor reviews” does, and I think this show cut to the heart of my recommended focus for the structure of the facilitator’s reviews. Thanks

I listened to “Choice” and “Emergence” today as I drove my bus (left ear only) and they were both premium. I have one little quibble - over produced! Your material is so good. Dial back on the production tricks a little. But by all mean keep it coming.

Comment from Teresa

I adore this program. Not only does it entertain and enlighten me while I drive, cook, clean, etc., but it has awakened the nerdy science girl in me that was squelched by an awful chem teacher. I can’t get enough!

This “Choice” episode fascinated me (as usual), and it gave my best friend and me hours of conversation. Thanks!…bitches.
