By WNYC Music
August 19, 2008
From August 18 through 24, WNYC is bringing back some of our best music specials from the past year during Evening Music. Explore the history of Berlin cabaret through the ears of one of its greatest living proponents, singer Ute Lemper. Hear one of the world’s most unique and valuable ensembles — the Orpheus Chamber Orchestra — bring important works to the stage for the first time. Cross genres with exciting live performances from Hilary Hahn, Josh Ritter, and Rufus Wainwright. And don’t miss one of the cultural events of the year, the New York Philharmonic’s historic concert in North Korea. You can view the entire schedule of broadcast events at this link, or see what’s on tonight by going here.

HCoomment on the show with guest DJ Ute Lemper
Hello, I wanted to congratulate Mrs. Lemper for this courageous report and outstanding historic recordings. Being German, I very much enjoyed the lyrics of the songs. When in US I regularly listen to your shows and allways enjoy that you present topics off the mainstream. Thanks Peter

Utte Lemper,
Spectacular! Chills ran down my spine as I was driving home and listening to yourt show on Bert Brecht.
The HUAC testimony was especially poignant. It was the first time that I heard it and I was surprised at the quality of Brecht’s command of English. He was simultaneously direct and nuanced. His straightforward responses to the questioning put the craziness of the early Cold War into sharp focus.
Both our commentary and selections would be useful in the college classroom. I, for one, would love tom have the entire program, as a podcast perhaps, for my class on “Modernism and its Discontents…” that focuses on Weimar.
Any chance?
Keep up the great work! Your voice in English as well as in German is magnificent.
Best,
Michael Riff

I would love to at the very least obtain the playlists for each of Ute Lemper’s shows - this ha been some of the best musical programming I have heard in a long time. Is there a way to hear the shows again, as podcasts, on a tape, whatever?
I would very much appreciate a response!

Mark, I could not be happier with your highlight of Nashvile…and I was delighted to learn of you love of country music…a love of mine for the last 30 years…something that usually drops like a lead foot at cocktail parties, but hey, what about the most genius film Coal Miners Daughter?

Oh, I came in late to the show…thought it was about country music movie scores!
I like what you are doing and am really happy with your choices.
I know that you are a music afficionato and are extremely well versed in music of all kinds.
How about a version of one of Morricone’s spaggetti western movie scores as interpreted by John Zorn?
I am waiting for someone, hopefully a modern western movie producer to use John’s work that Morricone, by the way endorsed.

I look forward to a time of Reality Art on TV… music that is spontaneous, and dance and poetry that work from the music. Or maybe dance starts it off..I don’t know. But whatever… Is this in the works? And if not, maybe you are the man to make it happen. Just a thought. Just want to see something that will engage me on, of all things, the great “free” American medium.
