Mostly Mozart Returns to WNYC

By Terrance McKnight

July 22, 2008

Kaija SaariahoThe Mostly Mozart Festival gets underway next week at Lincoln Center. During the past two years, the Festival has had a composer in residence; last year it was Osvaldo Golijov, this year it’s Finnish composer Kaija Saariaho. Both Michael Tilson Thomas and Osvaldo Golijov recently said that the music world is ready for our generation’s Mozart. In fact, Osvaldo told my colleagues at WNYC that he sees himself as playing a sort of “John the Baptist”-type role, preparing the way for the new Mozart to emerge. Which modern composers works will be revered two hundred years from now?

Louis LangréeNext Wednesday, July 30th, I will be at Avery Fisher Hall, broadcasting live the opening night program that features Mozart’s Symphony No. 40 and Gustav Mahler’s “The Song of the Earth,” arranged for chamber orchestra. Fred Child, host of Public Radio International’s Performance Today will join me for the concert, conducted by Louis Langrée. I hope you’ll join me there or on the radio!

Hello. You do play some nice music. Thanks.
Last night you played a nice Russian choral work. After it ended, you stated that the performance was by the Russian Chamber Chorus of New York and noted that perhaps a member might be living in your building-
yipes-I was lying in bed next to MaryEllen Callahan the featured Soprano on that disc-pretty good-no?
She was happy to hear her work but would have been happier to hear name of conductor-
Also you played an unidentified piece right before the Bach excerp from B Minor-yikes what was it-sounded like disc trouble then no more was said-

What a lovely program tonight. One of your most creative mixes. You’ve really stirred up “Evening Music” in an exciting way, and I look forward to it in a “Wonder what he’s going to do next?” kind of way.

I haven’t heard “My 20th Century” in a while. I really love it.
