Szot and O’Hara
After nearly 50 years without a Broadway production of this Pulitzer-prize winning, Rodgers and Hammerstein musical, Lincoln Center Theater ushers in its first Broadway revival with the vocal forces of Kelli O’Hara and Paulo Szot. Hear what commentator John Rockwell has to say, and find out why he gets teary-eyed throughout the performance.

Mr. Rockwell’s comments about SOUTH PACIFIC’s stars galled me when I first heard them on his Evening Music segment…and I was reminded of my intention to comment during Jonathon Schwartz’s (sp?) lovely tribute program to the musical during his recent Sunday broadcast.
Mr. Rockwell’s main guff with Kelli O’Hara seems to be that she isn’t spunky enough for his well-documented taste in cute little women. Perhaps Mr. Rockwell was too challenged by the nuanced, womanly and contemporary manner with which Ms. O’Hara played a roll that could too easily fall into charicature.
At the risk of sounding too feminist for this blog; I would warn Mr. Rockwell that his patronizing reviews of female performers, in both the music and dance fields, has not gone unnoticed in the performing community.
Take the note, sir, before you embarass yourself further.
