Last night in Damrosch Park, the New Jersey radio station WFMU in collaboration with Lincoln Center’s “Out of Doors” concert series presented the who’s who of modern Ethiopian music. The show included pairings such as the Ethiopian sax king Gétatchèw Mèkurya with Danish rockers The Ex, as well as Boston’s Either/Orchestra performing with the audience favorites Mahmoud Ahmed and Alemayehu Eshete.

Jessica Beshir from Park Slope was delighted to see Ahmed in New York for the first time, saying she was raised listening to his music. Beshir was one of the many Ethiopians who crowded the fence in front of the stage, sometimes even climbing on top of it.

Backstage, Punk Rock’s Patti Smith also enjoyed the performance.
