As I said in the radio piece, my problem with this Staycation business is that there really isn’t anything cute or catchy about summering in the city. But I am having fun this summer watching the French film noir double features at Film Forum - I can’t wait to see La Verite on Thursday, a 1960 film staring Brigitte Bardot.
This summer has been one great free outdoor concert after another, but the highlight is this Wednesday at Lincoln Center - I have always wanted to see Gétatchèw Mèkurya and Mahmoud Ahmed.
I also really had a great time on my tour to Fresh Kills park, one of the more far flung Go Local suggestions. I don’t think I’m brave enough for the lines outside the Empire State Building but I am keeping my eye on the Go Local site to see what they recommend for the rest of the summer.

My favorite local activities involve New York’s waterfront:
1. Take the new Ikea ferry to Red Hook,
2. visit Governors Island,
3. elbow tourists on the Brooklyn Bridge and then pick up ice cream at the Brooklyn Ice Cream Factory.

The US Open Qualifying Tournament is the perfect cost effective “staycation in Flushing” this week. Take the LIRR or the 7 train to the USTA Center. Bring your own lunch and enjoy the free tournament this week. The USTA staff and all the visitors are exceptionally friendly in this lively but not crowded event. Who knows which young stars will qualify this week for the US Open next week. It is a great opportunity to get upclose to top seeded players practicing for the open that starts next week, We saw Andy Roddick today. Enjoy the relaxed, frendly and uncrowded atmosphere. Get their early and enjoy the entire day in the fresh air.
