Joe Wigfall Wins the Street Shots Challenge

WNYC Radio and our contest judge Luc Sante are pleased to announce the winner of the Street Shots Challenge: Joe Wigfall.

“Joe Wigfall combines psychological acuity with impeccable composition–on the fly, of course–and a deep, virtually Rembrandt-etching feeling for tonality. Mr. Wigfall knows his people intimately–you sense that he finds a bit of himself in every one of his subjects. In addition, there’s a mystery in every shot, something left unresolved that works on our imaginations.”

So, join us. We will be hosting an opening at the Camera Club of New York, 336 West 37th Street (map) on July 10th from 7-9pm, and then meet with you all informally at Zipper Factory Tavern right next door. The work in the Camera Club of New York’s gallery will then be open for viewing from July 11th through August 8th, Monday through Friday 12-6pm, Saturdays 2-6pm, and other times by appointment only.

Not only does Joe have major street sense but also the artistic eye and split second timing to make it all cook…and what a recipe he does deliver.

  4. Marc Says:

Would it kill Joe to shoot some in color?

  5. Rbpatt Says:

It’s no surprise to me that Joe won this competition. I’ve been following his work for two years and continue to be amazed by his vision and timing. Visit his Flickr site and see for yourself. Oh yes, he’s done plenty of great work in color.

    OK shots but originality?

  7. Sampac Says:

Like Rbpatt, I am not surprised at Joe being the winner. He is one of the most passionate and energetic Street Photographer that I have come across. After, I have seen some of the work that he has done off the street, I understood why he is so big on details and quality. He tries to bring out the best work in all the photography that he does. He is a true Artist. Congratulations Joe, and thanks for sharing your work with the Flickr family.

There is a long tradition of shooting on the streets.
I feel it talks a very long time and determination to work the streets of New York or the streets anywhere in world. Anyone who thinks they can take images which transcend the moment in a short time is mistaking. There are a lot of ups and downs. Just take a look at the work of Louis Stettner, louis Faure, Helen Levitt, Leon Levinstein, and so many other who spent there entire life shooting on the streets.

    Joe,

You are so talented with such a keen eye. I watched your interview on Youtube and was touched by your passion as an artist. It is not always possible to make a good living doing what you love, but doing what you love (even as a hobby) is what keeps the artists all going! I see that in you and hope that one day you can be an artist full time. Winning this contest can only perpetuate that dream. Best wishes!!!
